Liguria Italy
|
|
 |
Liguria is made up of the Riviera Levante, a coastal,
hilly strip of land that stretches from Genoa to La Spezia, and
decidedly the most beautiful coastline in the north of Italy. The
coast is characterized by high cliffs that descend steeply to azure
seas and small bays.
The Riviera di Levante, is part of the cape of Portofino, the Gulf
Paradise and the Gulf of the Tigullio with seaside resorts Rapallo,
Portofino, Santa Margherita, Chiavari, Sestri Levante, Zoagli, Camogli
that have been popular with English tourists for almost 200 years.
The south of the coast is bounded by the charming villages of the
Cinque Terre and the Gulf of the Poets.

The coast enjoys a microclimate created by the
vicinity of the mountains to the sea and the region as a whole was
until recently quite isolated - reached by sea. This has preserved
the uniqueness of the area and the relationship between man and
environment. The semi-tropical plants - agave, prickly pears, palms,
and bouganvillea - adorn the houses which are painted with soft
pastels in accordance with the nature. Inland Liguria is dotted
with charming and tiny villages that are a delight to visit if only
to experience the rhythm of life from another time. The main port
of Genoa has a long naval history and Italy's most famous Aquarium
is found here.

La Spezia, Lerici or Portovenere all make picturesque day trips. Day
trips into northern Tuscany are very do-able and the marble quarries
of Carrara are nearby. The marine and agricultural traditions of this
region are proudly displayed in the excellent extra virgin olive oil,
excellent white wine, vegetables and seafood - all of which form the
base of the dishes of this beautiful region. |
